In 1878, critic John Ruskin accused painter James McNeill Whistler of "flinging a pot of paint in the public's face" for asking two hundred guineas for a painting that took two days. Whistler sued for libel. Asked in court if two days' work justified the price, Whistler replied: "No — I ask it for the knowledge of a lifetime." He won the case but was awarded just one farthing in damages.
